How to Use the Shanghai Metro as a Tourist

• Option 1: Tap an international contactless bank card (Visa, Mastercard) directly on the gate reader. Some gates now support this.
• Option 2: Go to the service counter or ticket machine and buy a single-journey ticket with cash or card.
• Option 3: Use an Alipay transit code, but only if you have already tested Alipay payments elsewhere in the city.

Do not make the metro gate your first experiment with any payment method. Test things at a convenience store first.

For most sightseeing, Line 2 plus one other line will cover 80% of where you want to go.

The main challenge is not language. It is knowing which ticket method to use and which exit to take when you arrive.

• 高峰期：尽量避开工作日早 7:30–9:00 和晚 5:00–7:00。列车非常拥挤。
• 出口策略：到站前先查好需要哪个出口编号。部分车站有 10 个以上出口，距离可能很远。
• 行李：带拉杆箱坐地铁还行，但大件行李请避开高峰期。
